Crossroads Community Association - “Boundless Birds”

In Calgary, the TransCanada Highway bisects the Crossroads Community Association, creating the separate districts of Vista Heights and Mayland Heights. We were commissioned to create public art that bridged the two, fostering a greater sense of connection. Public engagement sessions gathered the names of favourite bird species - as they knew no boundaries! - and a two part art project ensued.
Bird species, one per utility box, were painted throughout both neighbourhoods, assisted by in residents, with an accompanying walk tour map was part 1.
The second was the decoration of the pedestrian overpass that links the two neighbourhoods, with the same bird species flaying across, and painted on the support pillars. “Hand model volunteers’ were recruited, showcasing the rich, ethnic diversity of these neighbourhoods.
